The newest TV shows you should watch this December

The end of the year comes with surprises, and we're here to talk about the newest TV shows that are worth binge-watching.

Riches

What happens when a super-rich household squabbles over its patriarch's business conglomerate? It might sound familiar, but the focus here is on a black British clan. Sarah Niles (Ted Lasso) and Deborah Ayorinde (Them) are among the ideal team, and the trailer promises a great deal of amazing and outstanding outfits, plus some delectable melodrama. Watch it on Amazon Prime in the US.

Three Pines

The Spiderman films' villainous Doctor Octopus - Alfred Molina, is the latest respected performer to play TV investigator in this new series, adapted from Canadian author Louise Penny's novels focusing on the Quebec Chief Inspector Armand Gamache. In this first eight-part show, the detective finds himself studying a murder in the small town, which leads to disclosures about police corruption in the area but also the cases of a series of missing indigenous girls. Watch it on Amazon Prime internationally.

George and Tammy

Jessica Chastain won an Oscar playing Tammy and now she plays one in this bio-drama about country music artists. Michael Shannon plays Jones. It is a six-episode miniseries that explores their rough, seven-year relationship, a connection that witnessed them create some of the genre's most lasting classics, while they were struggling with alcohol and drug addictions. You can watch it on Showtime in the US.

Kindred

One of the greatest sci-fi writers, Octavia E Butler, made possible this adaptation her most famous novel. It is a speculative fantasy that involves Dana, a young black woman from Los Angeles that finds herself time travelling between the present and the past on a plantation in Maryland in 1815. The directors Darren Aronofsky from Black Swan and Janicza Bravo from Zola are implicated in the show. It is going to be hard to watch but rewarding. See it on Hulu in the US.

A Spy Among Friends

A real-life spy drama based on Ben Macintyre's book and starring Guy Pearce and Damian Lewis - it is about the relationship between Nicholas Elliott and Kim Philby. They are two MI6 agents in the post-war period with a complex relatioship as one of them is a double agent working for the KGB. A truly captivating adventure that you can watch on ITVX in the UK.

Strike: Troubled Blood

A fresh adaptation of J K Rowling's crime novels, written under her pen name Robert Galbraith. Tom Burke plays a private detective and Holliday Grainger plays his business partner: they return to study another twisted case but this time, it opens in Cornwall where one of them is visiting his aunt, and is approached by a woman about her mother's disappearance 40 years ago. The guest cast is special and you will see Linda Bassett, Kenneth Cranham, Cherie Lunghi, and Anna Calder-Marshall. Watch it on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK.

1923

Taylor Sheridan is the writer and showrunner quickly building an empire of shows. The Western drama Yellowstone has been extremely popular with US audiences, even if it hasn't influenced critics or won any awards. However, this prequel boasts this year's most amazing cast, including Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. They play the lead roles of the very same Dutton family back in the early 20th Century, and try to maintain the prosperity of their ranch in the face of rival cowboys and shifts in cattle farming. Watch this show on Paramount+ in the US and UK.

The Witcher: Blood Origin

Looking for a Christmas treat? If you're a fantasy fan, look no further as the prequel series to Netflix hit The Witcher is coming. It is set 1,200 years before the original series starring the fabulous Michelle Yeoh, who may be an Oscar- winner due to her performance in the breathtaking multiverse film Everything Everywhere All At Once. In the show, she plays Scian, the last in the line of so-called sword-elves, on a mission to hunt down a stolen sacred blade. You will see action skills and lots of violence. Make sure you sit comfortably and finished digesting your holiday meal before binge watching it on Netflix.
